Yamamoto Kenji(山本謙司) was interested in min'yō, rōkyoku, and kayōkyoku even when he was small.
In 1958, he went to Osaka as part of an employment group and worked at a dry cleaning store.
In 1960, he made his television debut in a singing contest and came in second with the song Tsugaru Mountain Song(津軽山唄 Tsugaru Yamauta).
In 1964, he moved to Tokyo and studied singing while making a living as a milk delivery man.
In 1965, he passed several auditions and as a result, he made his professional debut in 1966 with the songs "謙良節(Kenryōbushi)" and "ホーハイ節(Hōhai-bushi)."
