Gojinjo Drums(御陣乗太鼓 Gojinjo Daiko) by (北島三郎 Kitajima Saburō)

The drum which I strike shakes the ground
The drumsticks fiercely dance around
Noto's Gojinjo Drum, its sounds, my pride
Roar towards the approaching waves
My sweat which pours out from the sarashi*
This is a man's dreamy dew

Falling madly in love is fine from time to time
Wiping away tears is also fine
If you are a man don't stay depressed
Stylish caustic words aren't arrogant
I'm going to show them my heart's roars
The hot red burning bonfire

A man alone putting one's life on the line
Bringing happiness to this dark world
Especially when times are tough, forcing the way through pushing once, twice
I will bridge it with tomorrow as my hope
That's the hope from the gojinjo drums
Even the ogres lose control, this uncontrolled playing (of the drums)

*Sarashi is a long roll of cloth used to wrap around the body.

The steepest part of the mountain path of the slope of this fleeting life
It's amazing you climbed up all this way
Your sweat and my sweat
Both of us together on this mandarin duck pass
That flower this flower inside our hearts
The flowers we let bloom how many are there

The six-mat room was the first step
You waited for me even when I came home late
You are here I am here
The long path the mandarin duck pass
That time this time the time when we were in tears
Your kind heart to my chest

Don't say anything I already know
I always think in my heart
Your shadow and my shadow
Both overlap the mandarin duck pass
That dream this dream until the place just up ahead
Let's live our lives carefully, always

The painful sorrowful time of parting has come
From the day we first met
The seasons flowed by many years had passed
The memories too numerous to tell
To this chest to this chest
I hold as I get on the final flowery stage

I must not cry, I can't cry
Behind those words I am crying
The strong feelings of sympathies each
Give and take, that's also fine
This life this life
Putting this life on the line on this final flowery stage

Some time somewhere in the corner of the dressing room
If we could meet again, I would surely cry
Unable to voice a word, pupils wet with tears
If for a performance, to the ends of the earth
This figure this figure
I shall adorn on this final flowery stage

If the winds tangle, they change to a blizzard
I expect a storm from the start
A man's sea is simply just guts
The big wave which keeps us from our destination
Move forward by breaking it with the creaky bow
It's a bout of courage yoisho a big catch boat

The water that splashed on me I wipe with my fist
I expose my skin and cast the nets
This hard-working ship goes around hell
Whether we make it or lose it I understand
Stubbornness and patience the tide burned face is
The fisherman of the north's yoisho the blood boils

Saying goodbye to the offing's seagull
To the returning path I turn the rudder
On the land's ban'ya* drink a celebratory sake
The fluttering five colored big catch flag is
This is a man's life's proof
A smile souvenir's yoisho big catch boat

*Ban'ya is a place near the ocean where fishermen can work and rest.

Kitajima Saburō(北島三郎)

When Kitajima Saburō(北島三郎) was in high school, he saved a drowning boy, and the incident was reported in the Hakodate Newspaper(函館新聞 Hakodate Shinbun).

When the famous singing show NHK Amateur Singing Contest(NHKのど自慢 NHK Nodo Jiman) came around to Hakodate, Kitajima entered the contest, but didn't qualify for the finals. The show's announcer at the time, Miyata Teru(宮田輝), did mention that he had a good singing voice. This gave encouragement to the young Kitajima, and he started to wonder if he could succeed as a singer.

In 1954, he went to Tokyo to attend the Tokyo Vocal Speciality Music School (東京声専音楽学校 Tokyo Seisen Ongaku Gakkō). Because he wanted to sing kayōkyoku, he sung in Shibuya shops hoping to make a debut. Around this time, he married his landlord's daughter Masako(雅子) in spite of her parent's objections that he did not have a steady job.

One day, the entertainment director at Japan Columbia heard him sing and asked him to drop by a cafe. There, Kitajima met composer Funamura Tōru(船村 徹), and Kitajima became Funamura's student. Funamura did his best to secure a chance for Kitajima to make a debut but struggled since rockabilly was popular at the time, and pure enka singers weren't as popular.

When Kitajima finally made his debut, it was with the song Bungachabushi(ブンガチャ節), but a week after ir was released, it was banned from sale, apparently because the "kyu kyu" sound voiced in the song resembled the sound made by the springs in a bed mattress. They scrambled to find an alternate song, and they released "Ship of Tears(なみだ船 Namidabune)" instead, which became an instant hit. Although he was married, he hid this fact on his profile because at the time, new singers were all single.

Next year, he switched recording companies to the newly formed Crown Records, and made his debut on the Kōhaku Utagassen. His eldest son was born this year. The press caught wind of this fact, and he was forced to reveal that he was already married.

He continued his success through the decade, and in 1972, he formed his own talent office, Kitajima Music Office (北島音楽事務所 Kitajima Ongaku Jimusho).

In 1985, he held the world's first serious concert on an airplane using a specially built stage for the occasion.

Starting from 1963, he performed in fifty Kōhaku Utagassen, his last performance coming in 2013. He has announced his retirement from the annual show, having sung in the tori(トリ) position thirteen times and in the tori mae(トリ前) position thirteen times.

He has been appointed the sightseeing ambassador for Hachiōji(八王子).

He uses the pen name Hara Jōji(原譲二) when he writes lyrics and composes music.

His nickname is "Sabuchan(サブちゃん)."
