The Wintry Scenery of Tsugaru Strait(津軽海峡冬景色 Tsugarukaikyō Fuyugeshiki) by Ishikawa Sayuri(石川さゆり)

Song name: The Wintry Scenery of Tsugaru Strait
Singer: Ishikawa Sayuri
Lyrics: Aku Yuu
Composer: Miki Takashi

After getting off the night train departing from Ueno Station
The Aomori Station is covered in snow
Everyone in the crowd of people returning north is silent
Just listening to the rumblings of the sea
I also get on the renrakusen* alone
I stared at a freezing seagull
And started crying
Oh, the wintry scenery of Tsugaru Strait

Take a look, that's the Tappi Cape, at the northern edge
An unfamiliar person points it out
I tried wiping the window fogged by (my) breath
But I could only see the distant haze
Goodbye, I am returning home
The sound of the wind shakes my chest
Imploring me to start crying
Oh, the wintry scenery of Tsugaru Strait

Goodbye, I am returning home
The sound of the wind shakes my chest
Imploring me to start crying
Oh, the wintry scenery of Tsugaru Strait

*Renrakusen is a railroad that connects different railroads.

If the dream continues
You said you'll take me and run away
If the flow of the river is life
I'll follow you and be swept away
I fell in love, I fell in love
We got together because we fell in love
The river which cannot be rowed across alone, anta* river

We don't need a destination to row to
Let's just ride this flow along
It doesn't matter even if this is the headwind
We may yet see some tailwind from time to time
I like you, I like you
I followed you all this time because I like you
There is no place to go back, anta* river

No matter where we go, this flow
The moon will surely light the way
Both of us cast a single shadow upon the river's surface
I'll fall asleep as you hold me
This is, this is
This is the way it should be, if both of us are together
I will place my life on the line, anata* river

I will place my life on the line, anata* river

*Anta is used by a woman to refer to her significant other. A slightly less formal way of "anata."

Ishikawa Sayuri(石川さゆり)

Ishikawa Sayuri(石川さゆり) first became interested in singing when she was in first grade after attending Shimakura Chiyoko(島倉千代子)'s concert. In fifth grade, her family moved, and she started taking singing lessons.

In the third year of junior high school, she entered and successfully passed Fuji Television's singing competition in place of her friend who applied but wasn't able to make it. That year, she appeared in a serial drama "The Shining Sea(光る海 Hikaru Umi)."

She made her singing debut with Columbia Records in March of 1973 singing "Hide and Seek(かくれんぼ Kakurenbo)."

Her 1977 single "The Wintry Scenery of Tsugaru Strait(津軽海峡冬景色 Tsugarukaikyō Fuyugeshiki)" became a smash hit, winning multiple awards such as the 19th Annual Japan Record Awards' Singing Award.

She continued to release multiple hit songs in the 1980s including "Amagigoe(天城越え)" and "Drizzle at the Wharf(波止場しぐれ Hatobashigure)."

She married her former manager Baba Kenji(馬場憲治) in 1981, and her only child Saori(佐保里)(daughter) was born in 1984. They divorced in 1989, and she took custody of Saori. She has remained single since then.

Suzuki Ichiro(鈴木一朗) used her song "Amagigoe(天城越え)" in 2008 as one of his at-bat music.

She first appeared on Kōhaku Utagassen in 1977 and has appeared each year since then except 1983. She has sung in the tori(トリ) position six times and in the torimae(トリ前) position four times (as of 2014).
