Jōnouchi Sanae(城之内早苗) was a former member of Onyanko Club (おニャン子クラブ) (#17) and the only member who sang enka songs in that group. While there, she was called Ojō(お城).
When she was younger, she studied singing min'yō (民謡) and playing the shamisen.
She made her solo debut in 1986 with the single "Hydrangea Bridge(あじさい橋 Ajisai-bashi)." This single became the first ever enka song to debut at the top of the Oricon chart.
The professional pitcher (城之内邦雄 Jōnouchi Kunio) is her great uncle. Actor Chi'i Takeo(地井武男) is also her relative.
